Builder Gel vs Acrylic: Which Lasts Longer?
Builder gel — what we call Bio Gel on our menu — and acrylic are both strengthening overlays, but they behave differently on the nail and wear differently over time. Here's how they actually compare, guest to guest.
Weight & Natural Look
Bio Gel sits closer to the natural nail and flexes slightly with it, so it reads as thinner and more natural — a favorite for guests who want strength without the noticeably "done" look. Acrylic is more rigid and sits more on top of the nail, which some guests prefer for a crisper shape.
Durability
Acrylic is the stronger, more rigid option and tends to hold up best for guests who are hard on their hands or want maximum length. Bio Gel is plenty durable for everyday wear and short-to-medium lengths, but it isn't meant to compete with acrylic at very long lengths.
Odor & Application
Bio Gel is cured under a lamp rather than mixed from powder and liquid, so the appointment has noticeably less smell — one of the reasons it's become a house favorite in a salon built around ventilation and low odor. Acrylic has more smell during application, though it fades quickly once the set is finished.
Fills & Maintenance
Both need regular fills as your natural nail grows out — typically every 2–3 weeks for either option. Bio Gel fills tend to blend a little more seamlessly since the product itself is thinner at the cuticle line.
Cost
A Bio Gel Full Set starts at $68, with fills from $55. Acrylic Full Sets start a bit lower, from $58. See current pricing on our Bio Gel & Gel-X and Acrylic pages.
Our Take
If you want the most natural feel and the lowest-odor appointment, builder gel (Bio Gel) is usually the favorite. If you want maximum strength and length, or you're hard on your hands, acrylic is the more durable choice. Either way, your technician can show you both finishes in person before you commit.
Curious how Gel-X compares too? See our Gel-X vs Acrylic guide, or ask your technician which of the three fits your nails and lifestyle best.
