Your First Manicure: Etiquette and Answers
If you've never had a manicure before, the process is more straightforward than it might seem — here's what actually happens, step by step.
Booking and Arrival
Book ahead or walk in — either works. When you arrive, the front desk will ask what service you're after; if you're not sure, just say it's your first time and they'll help you decide.
The Consult
Your technician will ask about shape, length, and color before starting. This is the moment to speak up about anything — a shape you don't like, sensitivity to certain products, or a color you saw online.
What Happens During
Nail shaping, cuticle care, then polish or gel application. Most manicures run 30–45 minutes. It's completely normal to just relax and not make conversation if you'd rather not.
Tipping and Timing
Tipping 15–20% is standard — see our full tipping guide if you want specifics. Plan for a little extra time on your first visit in case the consult takes a few extra minutes.
See our full First Visit guide for what happens before and after the manicure itself.
