A gel manicure starts the same way as a classic one — trim, shape, cuticle work — but the color itself is a gel polish, cured under a UV or LED lamp between coats instead of air-drying. That cure is what gives it the glossy finish and the extra hold against chips.
Gel vs. Regular Polish
Regular polish is faster to apply and easier to change at home, but it chips sooner — often within a week. Gel takes a bit longer in the chair since each coat cures under the lamp, but it typically holds color and shine for 2–3 weeks before you need a fresh set.
Gel vs. Dipping Powder
Both are durable upgrades over regular polish, but they work differently. Gel is cured under a lamp and tends to look glossier and feel thinner. Dipping powder skips the lamp entirely and is usually the more durable option, often lasting 3–4 weeks.

Aftercare
- •Cuticle oil every 2–3 days keeps the polish edge sealed and the finish looking fresh.
- •Gloves for dishes and cleaning help prevent early lifting at the edges.
- •Come in for a professional soak-off when you're ready for a change — picking or peeling gel can take the top layer of your natural nail with it.
